Al Gore's Speech Today

It's speeches like this that remind me of why I voted for Al Gore in the first place. And it's a thought that is bittersweet. Sure, the guy had the personality of a Honeybaked Ham, but the man knew his shit. Check it out:
The President and I agree on one thing. The threat from terrorism is all too real. There is simply no question that we continue to face new challenges in the wake of the attack on September 11th and that we must be ever-vigilant in protecting our citizens from harm.

Where we disagree is that we have to break the law or sacrifice our system of government to protect Americans from terrorism. In fact, doing so makes us weaker and more vulnerable.

Once violated, the rule of law is in danger. Unless stopped, lawlessness grows. The greater the power of the executive grows, the more difficult it becomes for the other branches to perform their constitutional roles. As the executive acts outside its constitutionally prescribed role and is able to control access to information that would expose its actions, it becomes increasingly difficult for the other branches to police it. Once that ability is lost, democracy itself is threatened and we become a government of men and not laws.
Kind of interesting to think what our country would be like today had Dubya not stolen the election.

News Hounds has a transcript of Gore's speech here.

If we had a President Gore, 9/11 may or not have happened. We may or may not have invaded Iraq under pretenses true or false.

But even if so, I'm sure that we would've at least had an exit strategy.

And we wouldn't have our emails opened and our cell phone calls monitored. There'd be no No Fly lists and President Gore wouldn't have snatched control of the government.

If you haven't seen last night's Assclowns of the Week, I have a link proving that.

The personality of a Honeybaked Ham? I don't know...since his running mate was Jewish, maybe a kosher analogy would be more appropriate! Hehe...j/k.

Viva la Gore!

If he'd been this eloquent during the 2000 race, he might've gotten elected.
Same with John Kerry. It figures that he saves all the great speechifying for /after/ the friggin' 2004 race.
